Project Description:
1. Need It is estimated that 2 in 6 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with one or more developmental disabilities (CDC, 2012) such as autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities and more. The genetic diagnosis underlying many of these disabilities is increasingly understood and this knowledge is growing exponentially. However, many families and professionals are not aware of currently available services or testing, nor resources for the ongoing care of individuals. In addition, due to the large size of Texas, the limited number of practicing geneticists clustered in urban regions of the state, and the rapid progress made in genetic diagnosis, there is ongoing need for professional education. While it is hugely important to understand the diagnosis and therefore have a specific care and educational plan, it is also of paramount importance for parents to be able to visualize a trajectory of success for their child. What actions can they take right now that can help lead to meaningful real-life outcomes for this child? These 2 organizations are positioned to offer a unique plan to address these issues. 2. Overall goals and objectives Promote public education regarding Genetic-based disorders throughout the State of Texas through community seminars and educational webinars. Seminars and webinars will provide information on family support and recent advances in health care, education and research. 3. Unusual features: Multiple disciplines are involved. Events are held in underserved regions of Texas. Several events were presented bi-lingually. 4. Expected benefits Families and medical professionals will have access to resources and information not usually readily available to them.
