Southwest Conference on Disability

Center:
Fiscal Year:
2018
Contact Information:
Project Description:
The Center is the organizer of the annual Southwest Conference on Disability, which is held in Albuquerque each year during the International Balloon Fiesta. Attendance in past years has been between 1,000 and 1,200 people from the United States and other countries. The driving force behind the conference is that the field of disability is fractured and compartmentalized, and the conference is an opportunity to focus on what we have in common, not what divides us. Attendees include researchers, advocates and self-advocates, policymakers, staff of local, state and national disability organizations and staff of provider organizations. In addition to daily keynote addresses and over 100 breakout sessions, the conference features a disability film festival, Artisan's Showcase (where artisans with disabilities sell their wares) and other events.
