Center:
Fiscal Year:
2018
Contact Information:
Project Description:
Partner with Oklahoma PwD (parents with disabilities) and other self-advocates to identify obstacles they are facing related to parenting. Based on their responses, partner with the National Center for Parents with Disabilities at Through the Looking Glass (TLG) to plan and provide professional development for health, allied health and human service professionals. Strategies: A) Take part in listening sessions with at least 6 self-advocacy groups to hear their experiences as parents and potential parents and consider what sort of training feel would be helpful to them or the professionals who support them. B) Assist the FAR committee coordinator to identify PwD and other self-advocates to serve on the committee and provide advice and insight on this project. C) Have the training coordinator and another member of the FAR committee attend training on Person Centered Thinking as it is integrating with the Community of practice, facilitated by the UCEDD and ODDC, seeking ways to apply these concepts to PwD and their families. D) Apply to have FAR committee members present at 1-2 statewide conferences on this topic to gauge knowledge and collaboration gaps. E) Work with the FAR committee to explore the capacity of our states Centers for Independent Living (CIL) and the availability of funding at the national level for CIL services dedicated to PwD. F) Work with self-advocates and TLG staff to develop a 2-day training workshop focused on overcoming obstacles for PwD in Oklahoma and purchase supporting materials from TLG. Their resource list can be viewed online at: www.lookingglass.org G) Pilot a lunch & learn screening event of the TLG video, Techniques & Adaptations for Parents with Significant Physical Disabilities with the neonatal staff at OU Childrens Hospital as part of their existing Lunch & Learn series. Provide supporting TLG materials. H) Offer the same screening event as an option for the DHS lunchtime lecture series and provide TLG resource materials.
