Sensory Integration Therapy in Autism: Mechanism and Effectiveness
Project Description:
This study compares the efficacy of Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT) and Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) on improving functional skills for children with autism and heightened sensory sensitivities ages 6-8.5 years of age. The specific aims are to: 1) compare 30 session SIT to the same dosage of ABA to evaluate immediate and sustained changes in functional skills and maladaptive behaviors; 2) assess underlying mechanisms of treatment by evaluating their impact on multisensory integration processes; and 3) determine whether autism severity, cognitive level or severity of sensory symptoms moderate intervention outcomes.
