Project Description:
This application proposes to engage in a rigorous evaluation of self-determination interventions implemented in RI schools to promote outcomes for students with ID. RIDE is implementing self-determination interventions statewide as a means of addressing a consent decree entered into by the state of RI resulting from violations of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act related to the employment options available for people with ID. The need for effective transition services and supports to enable transition-age youth to move from schools to integrated employment was identified in the consent decree. Self-determination was selected an intervention that would be implemented to address the consent decree as research findings link self-determination with postschool outcomes including employment. Both the SDLMI and WFA have evidence of their efficacy when implemented individually; what is not known, and what is the primary question of the present proposal, is whether there are significant gains in SD (and other outcomes) as a function of implementing both interventions versus only one (the SDLMI).
