Center:
Fiscal Year:
2017
Contact Information:
Project Description:
The intent of the project is to develop an introductory curriculum for family members so that they better understand their childs eligible condition (i.e., Autism Spectrum Disorders, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, intellectual disability, and specific information regarding Down Syndrome), how it manifests, and how this disability will impact the childs needs for services throughout his or her lifetime. Materials are, in particular designed for parents who are members of currently underserved racial, ethnic, linguistically diverse groups, so materials will be translated into Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese and contracts will be given to community parent groups with members from these ethnic groups to review all developed materials for cultural sensitivity. Training materials will be available in two formats: (1) online interactive; (2) a Trainer's Handbook which will be utilized by qualified trainers through in-person presentation, either in small groups or larger groups. The modules will include testing of users for comprehension of the material.CA-LEND students will be used to develop the modules and undergraduate students from Cal State LA's Post-Baccalaureate pre-Med programs will develop the section on the biological/genetic etiology of specific conditions.
