We Walk: A pilot technology intervention to promote PA for adults with ID and their family caregivers
Project Description:
Physical inactivity is a major, potentially modifiable risk factor for obesity and type 2 diabetes, as well as a major cause of premature death from cardiovascular disease. Adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) tend to be physically inactive and are more likely to be obese compared to the general population. The majority of adults with ID live at home and most of their caregivers are frequently confronted with the challenges of maintaining their own health. Evidence has shown that health benefits can occur from simply increasing the number of steps one takes each day, and that support from friends and family can also motivate people to stay active. Hence, there is a great need for the implementation of health promotion to promote physical activity for adults with ID and their family caregivers. This study will assess the feasibility and efficacy of 'We Walk,' a technology intervention to promote physical activity in adults with ID and their family caregivers.
