Project Description:
Comunico con mi Equipo! is a web-based resource to provide Spanish-speaking parents with information about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in their native language. The goal is to foster AAC use at home for children with complex communication needs. Many children with developmental disabilities (DD) have a variety of complex communication needs such as limited speech, behavior challenges, and poor communication skills interfering with language development and social interactions. A significant proportion of children who require special education services also require AAC strategies to facilitate effective daily communication. AAC includes external tools such graphic symbols displayed on cards/boards and speech generating devices that convey verbal messages. Research has shown that AAC can significantly increase self-expression, decrease behavior challenges, and improve overall communication in children with DD. Research also suggests that parents need on-going support, training, and information in their preferred language regarding applications and uses of AAC in the home.
