Project Description:
Project goals. Our project responds directly to the need for such culturally-focused efforts. Its goals are: To provide a safe, supportive, culturally-appropriate forum for Native American women to break the silence about domestic and sexual violence in their lives and their communities. To increase Native womens understanding and knowledge of issues related to domestic and sexual violence and the resources available to address them. To facilitate Native womens access to available services and resources addressing domestic and sexual violence. To offer Native women impacted by domestic and sexual violence the opportunity to develop skills in Native arts and crafts as a means of cultural connection, healing, and potential income generation. This project is part of long-term initiative INENAS has embarked upon to address the issue of violence against Native American women in the Commonwealth. It will enable us to refine an intervention, collect pilot data and develop a track record that we can build upon to access future funding from federal and state sources ( e.g. Department of Justice Office of Violence against Women; Massachusetts Department of Public Health) as well as private foundations for which violence against women and/or Native community development are a focus (e.g. the Verizon, TJX, and Kallaeiopia Foundations). In addition to continuing the Circles of Care at NAICOB and replicating it at other sites, we are considering a number of directions for follow-up programming, including a Community Advocates program for Circle graduates who want to take leadership on preventing and addressing violence against women in their communities, and development of vehicles for exhibiting and selling participants crafts such as a Native Womens Crafts Cooperative.
