Interdisciplinary Training Program
Project Description:
The Sonoran UCEDD developed and implemented its interdisciplinary training program January 15, 2009 with its first cohort of five trainees. Since then the program has evolved to include an Undergraduate Certificate in DD, in addition to individual graduate assistantships and internships.
The Certificate program consists of:
Core course. FCM 496D, Disability Perspectives: Research, policy, and practice. 3 units, required of all students, offered only in the fall semester - 2015 Syllabus
Two 3-unit courses, chosen from the menu below
*PSYC 405, Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, with a special discussion section for certificate students; offered in the fall.
*SERP 416, Disability Perspectives and Narratives, which focuses on narratives written by people with disabilities about their experiences; offered in the spring
*CPH 405, Biology in Public Health Research and Practice, offered in the fall
*CPH 408/508, Disabilities in Public Health, offered in the spring
*Other courses to fulfill this requirement may be considered by the students faculty advisor
A one-unit Independent study. FCM 497. Required. Student will create a portfolio that includes description and analysis of experiences in the disability community that have been set up in consultation with the students faculty advisor or UCEDD mentor. Typically will include short reports about various meetings in the community as well as a written reflection on a required weekend workshop on professional roles in serving the Developmental Disabilities community. Evening and weekend times may be necessary.
A two-unit Directed research experience. FCM 492A. Required. This is a scholarly project, typically a literature review or involvement in research

The fundamental objective of the Sonoran UCEDD Interdisciplinary Training Program is to prepare students from a variety of disciplines to become leaders and advocates in the disability field with an understanding of principles of self-determination and meaningful community inclusion for all people with disabilities.
