AT TEAM - Perhaps the greatest resources available to the Assistive Technology Programs at the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) are the skill and dedication of its staff. The expertise and activities of the staff support the achievement of the Assistive Technology Program's mission in provision of AT services for people with disabilities. The Assistive Technology team at WIHD has a wide range of expertise in the evaluation and implementation of AT options for individuals who require supports in the areas of communication, access, reading/writing/spelling. Additionally, office staff provides the support and expertise to provide information and referral dissemination activities, public awareness, and up-to-date resources in assistive technology. Specific activities of the AT team includes the following: EVALUATION SERVICES- AT evaluations are conducted for referred clients. The evaluation team offers up to two specialists per client. The number of disciplines required for an evaluation is dependent upon the individual's needs. During initial intake, the AT team and referral source can usually determine the number of disciplines necessary. Evaluations typically require between 2-4 sessions. A detailed report with device recommendations and recommended training is completed. TRAINING SERVICES: Specific training on recommended device is often required for the individual and his/her family, educators, etc. Training involves teaching operation of devices and also implementation strategies. CONSULTATION: When requested, AT team members provide consultation services to various organizations in many settings including school districts, homes, and work settings. STAFF DEVELOPMENT and TRAINING: When requested, WIHD AT specialists provide staff training to various organizations. Customized trainings are designed to meet the constituents' needs. Areas of training may include, but are not limited to: augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), reading/writing/spelling supports (high and low tech), computer access, AT device overview, and software customization, iPads, and iDevices with applications for assistive technology.
