Project Description:
The purpose of this grant it to provide a leadership in disability fellowship program at the University of Connecticut UCEDD to students from traditionally underrepresented groups who have experienced disparities in training opportunities. There will be two separate groups who will be targeted in this proposal, each represented by a separate project goal, training approach and outcomes. Goal 1 will provide a 9 month learning experience to 3 senior undergraduate trainees who are from culturally, racially and linguistic minority backgrounds and who are majoring in Human Services at Goodwin College in Hartford, Ct. The fellowship will consist of 10 hours a week at the UCEDD in didactic learning, field based practica, participation in a research project, and the completion of a community capstone project. A main outcome of the fellowship is the completion of a career plan that will include graduate school in a discipline that will allow a career path in disabilities. Goal 2 will implement a leadership curriculum with 14 youth with differing disabilities who are the board of the CT Kids Are Self Advocates (KASA), which is an affiliate of National Family Voices. The fellowship will consist of 4 didactic all day meetings during the school year, and a group capstone project. Each member will also attend at least one UCEDD staff meeting and each will also come to at least one consumer advisory council meeting, The outcome will be the presentation of the capstone project at a legislative forum. Evaluation will use both formative and summative measures to monitor and insure project effectiveness.
