Project Description:
The goal of the Hawaii Paraprofessional Training Institute (PTI) is to increase the number of skilled paraprofessionals entering the Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) workforce. Proposed outcomes are: 1) increased entry/enrollment into training program; and 2) increased rates of certificated candidates entering HIDOE employment. Evidence based, culturally responsive practices will be integrated to address 3 categories of barriers to increasing participation and progression into paraprofessional fields: 1) cultural incontinuity and incompatibility (lack of access to programs in underserved areas and lack of culturally relevant academic and advising supports); 2) limited career awareness (field placements and internship opportunities in geographically remote areas); and 3) limited access to resources for professional development (tuition for programs, skilled mentors from diverse backgrounds, ongoing training beyond certificate programming).
