Cooperative Nutrition Network - Food Stamp Telemed
Project Description:
In October 2003, the BCDD Nutrition Department was awarded funds from the USDA Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program (FSNE) via the state of Tennessee. BCDD’s Positive Lifestyles Project was funded in year one at ~$160,000. The project reaches a target population of food stamp participants, persons with low-income, and persons with developmental disabilities by collaborating with local agencies, including the Shelby County-Family Assistance Program, Memphis Center for Independent Living, Memphis Mental Health Center, the Shelby County Public Library System, and faith-based organization located in areas serving food stamp participants. Local interventions include a six-session workshop series and health fair/nutrition education booths held in the greater Memphis area. The workshop series was successfully piloted with sessions including education on food quality, healthy weight, physical activity, food safety, thrifty shopping, budgeting and the food stamp program. Nutrition education materials on the above listed topics have been distributed at the Boling Center, local health fair booths, and during the workshop series. In fiscal year 2004, core educational topics have been addressed within the area surrounding BCDD through dissemination of nutrition educational materials and by one-on-one and group didactic workshops. As of June 31, 2004, the BCDD’s FSNE Project has successfully addressed fiscal year 2004 goals one through four. These efforts have reached a total contact number of 3734.
