Project Description:
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is a professional membership organization of 60,000 primary care pediatricians, pediatric medical sub-specialists and pediatric surgical specialists dedicated to the health, safety, and well-being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults. AAP chapters are organized groups of pediatricians and other health care professionals working to achieve AAP goals in their communities. The US chapters are drawn generally along state lines. The mission of the Kansas Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (KAAP) is: The attainment by all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults of their full potential for physical, mental, emotional, and social health. Together with those who share this purpose, the Kansas Chapter pledges its efforts and expertise to a fundamental goal-that all children and youth have the opportunity to grow up safe and strong, with faith in the future and in themselves. Current KAAP priorities include: Early Literacy, Immunizations, Mental Health-KidLink, Obesity, Oral Health, and Tobacco. The KAAP is also involved with legislative issues that impact children. Kathryn Ellerbeck is the President of the KAAP. Benefits to the UCEDD/LEND include opportunities for collaboration with pediatricians on providing medical homes for all children, including those children with special heath care needs (CYSHCN),as well as advocacy on 2013 AAP Strategic Priorities: (1) Early Brain and Child Development, (2) Epigenetics, (3) Children, Adolescents and Media, and (4) Poverty.
