Project Description:
Disability Cinema brought together students and community members to view and discuss four feature films or documentaries about disability experiences. The goal of the project was to raise awareness about assumptions, constructions, and interpretations of disability that are embedded in these media and consider the influence of different disability representations on the lives of people with disabilities, communities, and social institutions. Once each week during the University's winter session, the campus and local communities were invited to participate in a 2.5 - 3 hour event that included (1) a 10 - 15 minute TED - style presentation to the night's movie by a guest speaker with a disability, (2) viewing a feature film or documentary in which disability plays a role, and (3) facilitated discussion of the issues in the film/documentary.
