Fiscal Year:
2016

Project Description:
The Baby Buffer Social Media Program is a grant to the Kansas Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics through the Healthy People 2020 grant program (funded by the AAP's Friends of Children program). The purpose for the grant is to educate pediatric providers about the new science behind toxic stress and early brain and child development and to support the peditrician in providing information about positive parenting that can buffer toxic stress. Need: The primary support to early brain and child development is a supportive responsive parent-child relationship. Per AAP Policy Guidelines, pediatricians are on the front line with regards to helping parents understand the importance of parenting to early brain development and in providing information on positive parenting. The pediatric well child visit is short, and this program is designed to support pediatricians with information sent to parents of children aged birth to two years through weekly emails. Overall goals: To determine whether physicians will "prescribe" the Baby Buffer Program and whether parents (particularly disadvantaged parents) will use/open email messages about positive parenting. Unusual features: The program content was developed by UCEDD/LEND faculty in partnership with the Kansas Chapter of the AAP. The content includes a tag line, a "brain science" piece, and prescriptions for positive parenting practices as well as a prescription for the parent (to decrease parenting stress). Expected benefits: The pilot program will show that both pediatricians and parents appreciate the parenting information and information on the new brain science on the importance of parenting to healthy brain development.
