Project Description:
Need: No postsecondary program exists in the state of Louisiana for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Individuals with intellectual disabilities have poor post-school outcomes. A model of how to provide postsecondary services to facilitate postsecondary and vocational outcomes is needed. Overall goals and objectives: The Postsecondary Education for All Collaborative (PEAC) has two primary goals. First, the project will establish a postsecondary program for individuals with intellectual disabilities concurrently enrolled in their LEA and Delgado Community College. Participants should complete PEAC with a certificate from Delgado and employment experiences. Second, the project will provide Delgado Community College with experiences in Universal Design for Learning. Unusual Features: PEACis an innovative collaboration between the LSU HSC Human Development Center and Delgado Community College. PEAC is one of 27 model demonstration Transition Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID) grants funded by the U.S. Department of Education. PEAC provides services to individuals with intellectual disabilities (IWID), ages 18-21, who express an interest in attending a postsecondary institution and are currently enrolled in a participating school district. PEAC is a fully inclusive postsecondary program. Students participate fully in coursework and activities at Delgado Community College. Expected Benefits: Benefits are expected to acrue in several ways. First, participants in the program are expected to be employed upon completion of the program. Second, DCC faculty and staff are expected to implement principles of UDL which will benefit additional students. Finally, PEAC will provide a model for the state of Louisiana to replicate at other community colleges.
