Project Description:
Jumpstart is "working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed". It is a national non-profit organization that partners with colleges and universities to recruit, hire and train college students to work as one-to-one mentors for low-income preschoolers for the academic year. This is an AmeriCorps program and the student 'Corps members' work part-time in low-income Head Start centers and other low-income preschools to support the children in the development of language, literacy and social skills that are crucial for school success. We strive to engage families and communitites in our efforts. Jumpstart at Georgetown University serves the Mt. Pleasant and Columbia Heights communities of DC. The majority of the children served are low-income minorities. We expect that children participating in Jumpstart will be better equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in Kindegarten.
