Fiscal Year:
2015
Contact Information:
Project Description:
CPD will establish and administer a leadership program for people with developmental disabilities addressing two objectives of the Utah Disabilities Council: 1) Self-advocacy; and 2) engage in efforts that support people with disabilities to develop positive healthy relationships. Statewide guidelines, recommendations, format and marketing will be established in the leadership development plan. Mentor and peer outreach plans will be implemented for each candidate. These best practices will be shared nationally. Advocates as Leaders, Self Advocacy Speakers Bureau is a group of trained speakers with developmental and intellectual disabilities that focus on providing information and experiences related to disability issues, presented through their eyes. Each presentation is designed and presented by self advocates who have expertise in a variety of subjects that impact the lives of people with disabilities. They use their skills to dispel the myths about what people with disabilities truly believe, cherish and value. Their message is one of hope, overcoming lifes challenges, and the opportunities now available to people with disabilities and their families.
