Project Description:
Students with disabilities are less likely to complete high school and experience successful post-school outcomes, making it critically important that students have control over their educational careers and postsecondary outcome goals. To establish realistic postsecondary goals a student must first understand his or her disability and the impact of the disability on various areas of his or her life. Research reveals students with developmental disabilities require intensive and prolonged instruction to develop necessary leadership and advocacy skills. The goal of the project is to increase the leadership and advocacy skills of youth with disabilities and their family members by providing direct instruction in school classrooms, supporting leadership projects in community and school, and presenting support information to parents of students with disabilities. This project targets high school students with disabilities, students at risk of dropping out of high school, and parents of students with disabilities. Students who participate in this project will increase their global self-determination skills, develop leadership skills and implement these skills in community settings, identify post-school educational and employment goals, and making successful transition to adulthood.
