WSU Medical School Co-curricular Project
Project Description:
Research indicates that medical students do not receive adequate training to work with people with disabilities. DDI is collaborating with the DDI Medical School to provide the following:
1) Disabilities awareness training
2) Arrangement of visits between WSU medical students and families of children with disabilities
3) Students will conduct a Beach Quality of Life assessment with families
4) Students provide families with a list of resources developed by DDI staff
5) Students conduct follow-up visits 2 months after initial visit to assess any changes in the families reported quality of life
6) Families provided stipend
The goal is to engage medical students in activities with families so they can become sensitive to the unique needs of families who have children with disabilities. As doctors, these students will be better able to effectively address the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities.
