Project Description:
THe Inclusion Facilitator Option within the University of New Hampshire's M. Ed. Program in Special Education certifies special education teachers in the category of "Mental Retardation" and prepares them to teach students with significant disabilities in inclusive classrooms and schools. This Option was started in 1999 with funding from the Personnel Preparation grant from the U. S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. During the 3 year grant period, 19 new teachers were trained. The Education Department at UNH then approved the Option as part of its regular program. Courses include: Contemporary Issues in Developmental Disabilities, Positive Behavior Supports, Curriculum and Instruction, Facilitating Social Relationships, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Teaching Reading to Students with Disabilities, and Advocacy and Systems Change.
