Project Description:
This research project proposes to combine AAC technology and innovative Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques in an effort to develop and evaluate a novel intervention tool for individuals with language loss secondary to PPA. We will develop a mobile technology application, CO-CHAT, to support language co-construction and word finding skills in adults who are experiencing devastating and gradual language impairments. As pervasive mobile technologies and social media become standard modes of electronic communication, individuals with PPA must find ways to harness the power of digital communication to improve or maintain their verbal participation as they lose language skills. The development and implementation of new AAC devices that adapt to the lexical needs of the user is now practical, with contributions from the science of computer language technology. We propose to apply NLP algorithms to the design of a simulated social media app that creates lexical displays for individuals with PPA. We will test the app in a structured but functional experimental design. The overall goal of this innovative research is to take an initial step toward the creation of adaptive language prostheses that augment lexical access and word use in PPA as skills are lost.
