Project Description:
A core grant from ADD funds the NM Center for Development and Disability (CDD) as a University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disability Education, Research, and Service(UCE). The CDD serves the lifespan needs of children, adults, and their families with disabilities in all areas of New Mexico. The CDD's projects and programs have been developed to respond to the unique geographic, economic, demographic, and cultural needs of our state's citizens with disabilities. New Mexico is the fifth largest state in the nation, and ranks 44th in population density. At least 42% of New Mexicans classify themselves as Hispanic and 10% as Native American. The CDD's mission, goals, values, and vision were developed with input from the Consumer Advisory Board, the DD Planning Council, and the Protection and Advocacy Agency. The mission of the CDD is the full inclusion of people with disabilities and their families in their community by: engaging individuals in making life choices; partnering with communities to build resources; and improving systems of care. The values of the CDD are cultural and linguistic diversity, inclusion and accessibility for all individuals, partnerships and collaboration that encourage capacity building within communities, and practice that is innovative, interdisciplinary, and research-based. The CDD's goals are: 1. The Center will increase the knowledge and skills of students, providers, family members, and people with disabilities in a variety of disciplines. 2. Through partnerships with people with disabilities and families, the Center will provide community service and technical assistance. 3. The center will participate in research activities that have an impact on education, service, and policy. 4. The Center will disseminate research findings and the products it develops. The following benefits will come to citizens as the CDD strives to fulfill it's vision, as identified through the strategic planning process. The CDD will strive to identify, develop, and strengthen opportunities and choices for all persons with disabilities and their families throughout their lives, so that they are included in all aspects of society. The CDD will participate in collaborations to enhance resources and maximize opportunities for persons with disabilities, their families, and those who support them. The CDD will respond to their interests and concerns through leadership in education, research, and service. Finally, the CDD will influence policies to reflect what is known about the variety of strengths and needs of all persons with disabilities and their families, while recognizing and integrating the diverse values of individuals, families, and communities.
