Project Description:
Evidence shows pediatricians lack of confidence in discussing developmental delay and disability with families as one of the main barriers to perform recommended, regular screening of infants and young children. Medical training programs are grappling with how to provide this content in a meaningful way in their busy curricula. A Active and Team Based Learning Seminar on early childhood development, screening, identification and referral for young children with delays and disabilities for the GU School of Medicine Pediatric Clerkship (PEDS300) for third year medical students was upgraded to include a distance learning module to understand screening and identification of developmental delays so that the short 1 hour in-person seminar time could be used for case discussion and questions for more advanced learning. This gave time to students time for practice, discussion and reflection about interacting with families that build provider confidence in developmental screening. This project was used as an opportunity to explore technologies to take current text and Power Point lecture material and create an interactive online module on our GU Early Childhood Intervention Professional Development Center (http://learningei.org/) for the didactic information. Students accessed and interacted with this material prior to the seminar to be prepared to go deeper into discussion. The fact-to-face seminar was dedicated to bringing questions, respond to actual case scenarios, practice family interactions and reflect on their experiences. Evaluations showed the students reported increased confidence in their ability to screen and interact with families about developmental delay and disabilities. The interactive module was placed on our website and made available to the public including to related programs such as the School of Nursing, Psychiatry, or other School of Medicine instructors and also remain a resource for the University and the community.
