Disability Studies Internship Program

The Disability Studies Internship Program (DSIP) at the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities in the College of Health Science is concerned with increasing the awareness, knowledge, and skills of students regarding people with disabilities and their families. DSIP is an academic community of students who have united in a one (1) year commitment to learn how to advocate and serve people with disabilities and their families in and through their respective disciplines. DSIP has bridged the gap between colleges by attracting graduate and undergraduate students from a breadth of disciplines. The goal of DSIP is to facilitate the academic and professional development of students through a competency-based curriculum using didactic and experiential teaching methods, and mentorship. Through semi-monthly seminars, project administration, portfolio development, and symposium presentations, students gain skills in leadership, mentoring, and interdisciplinary collaboration. To ensure best practices, consumers and their families have consulted in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of this program. The current cohort includes students from graphic design, women studies, nursing, pharmacy, public relations, special education, public administration, and AmeriCorp-Vista volunteers.
