Project Description:
The Institute on Disability and Human Development is the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD) for the State of Illinois. We are unique in that we are one of the only UCEDDs that is also an academic department (Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago). We began operations in July 1988 and are located on the medical campus of UIC in an area designated as a Federal Empowerment Zone. We currently house 8 research centers, a family clinic, an assistive technology unit, a LEND program, and an academic program with over 145 Faculty, professionals, clinicians, researchers, staff, and graduate students. Core funding from AIDD allowed us to leverage more than $10.6 million in FY 2012. The 5-year plan reflects the core goals mandated by the DD Act: 1) interdisciplinary per-service training; 2) community services (model services, community training, and technical assistance; 3) research; 4)dissemination. IDHD primarily focuses on health, though we do several activities in leadership development, disability studies, assistive technology, and policy.
