Project Description:
This project pilots a health promotion program for adults with ID delivered by Special Olympics Alaska. The program incorporates core activities recommended for model health promotion programs related to exercise and nutrition for this population, including encouragement to increase physical activity; regular, targeted fitness activities to change body composition; nutrition and health education; and motivational strategies that support life style changes (Marks et al., 2010). This project incorporates the disciplines of disability studies, nursing, and public health and addresses the College Of Health's strategic issue of health systems, services, and policy research, specifically assessing the health outcomes of adults with ID. A secondary benefit of this study is training future health care professionals about the health care needs of individuals with ID.
