Project Description:
The American Academy of Pediatrics' Council of Children with Disabilities (COCWD) is composed of nearly 500 AAP Fellows who care for or have an interest in children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN). Members of the COCWD are dedicated to the optimal care and development of children with disabilities and to the support of their families within a medical home. COCWD members include neurodevelopmental pediatricians, developmental and behavioral pediatricians, geneticists, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists, and general pediatricians. The COCWD maintains liaison relationships with the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Family Voices. Through these partnerships, the COCWD has been able to expand their mission to help pediatricians implement policy into their practices. The COCWD Autism Subcommittee (ASC) is tasked with serving as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) content experts for the AAP as a whole, including the COCWD and the CDC cooperative agreement - the Medical Home Surveillance and Screening Program (MHSSP). The responsibilities and activities of the ASC may include: POLICY: (1) Draft ASD clinical report guidelines in collaboration with the COCWD Executive Council, (2) Review AAP ASD-related clinical reports and policies; PUBLICATIONS AND PROJECTS: (1) Develop content for AAP products related to ASD (2) Review ASD content in publications not developed by the ASD; MEDIA: (1) Serve as media contacts for the AAP, (2) Participate in media training offered through the AAP; EDUCATIONAL: (1) Develop ASD session proposals for the NCE in collaboration with the COCWD Education Committee, (2) respond to speaker requests for national and chapter level AAP meetings or educational offerings (3) Review AAP Web site content related to ASD; GRANT INITIATIVES: Provide oversight regarding the ASD activities of the MHSSP. Kathryn Ellerbeck, MD is a member of the Autism Subcommittee. Benefits to the UCEDD/LEND program include: opportunities to participate in educational offerings related to ASD, and opportunities to collaborate on development and review of products developed by the ASC.
