Project Description:
The Washoe County School District (WCSD) has partnered with NV BVR and the NCED to expand the Community-Based Career Exploration activities with the VOICE project. State funds are given to BVR for the CMS 4:1 federal match, making a $250K project into a $1.25M project. The project serves 18-22 yr old WCSD students with significant disabilities by bringing them into the community to experience a wide variety of vocational interests. Funding is provided for Dr. Harrington to to teach WCSD transition teachers and staff what is "Discovery" and "Portfolio development" and the supports to help transition students with disabilities into the community. The project is four years in duration and will result in a training manual for future years. An unusual feature of the project is the utilization of the Customized Employment philosophy and practices. Expected benefits include at least 20 placements of students with disabilities in community jobs and a educated transition staff.
