Project Description:
This three-year project is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is part of a small group of grants awarded to National Minority Organizations (NMO’s) for the development of culturally appropriate strategies for diabetes prevention and control among minority populations. Activities funded under this federal grant are intended to support the larger National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), a joint effort between CDC and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The first three years of the project provided funding to initiate diabetes education and awareness efforts in 15 Affiliates of the National Urban League located in Atlanta GA, Champaign IL, Chicago IL, Dayton OH, Houston TX, Kansas City MO, Louisville KY, Miami FL, Minneapolis NN, New York NY, Omaha NE, Phoenix AZ, St. Louis MO, Seattle WA, and Wichita KS. A major goal of the current project is to establish regional technical assistance and training centers within selected Affiliates of the NUL. These regional centers will assist other NUL affiliated in their region to initiate and develop diabetes prevention and education activities.
