PAR: Participatory Action Research-People First Members & Advisors in Action
Project Description:
The Nevada Center for Excellence (NCED) had a VISTA (Volunteers in Service To America) project for 10 years. The project began as a statewide People First (self-advocacy) project and expanded to become a statewide youth transition project with 13 VISTA members. The project was unique because five of the VISTA members have intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD). The VISTA project ended in June 2012. During the next year, the NCED worked with People First to focus on sustainability as an organzation. As an evaluation and research tool, People First members and mentors evaluated the People First project regarding: What strategies are working to make each People First chapter and the overall statewide People First organization sustainable. Members amd mentors were videotaped answering questions about sustainability and video clips will be posted on on Voicethread, a secure website, which is accessed only by NCED staff. Ideas, but not the videos themselves, will be shared with other chapters. This research will assist other People First chapters and self-advocacy organizations to become sustainable.
