Project Description:
The mission of the Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) Motion Analysis Lab includes both the provision of diagnostic clinical services and also clinical and applied research. The Hattie B. Munroe Foundation has provided core funding to the Lab for the development of a Lab’s research program for 2000-05. Funding supports a percentage of the salary of an orthopedic surgeon, physical therapist and lab technician. Focus of the funding is to support research project development and completion, grant writing, and presentation/publication of scholarly work completed in the lab. Projects that have been completed, are in progress or are being developed are as follows: 1. Normal walking in typically developing children. 2. Normal stair climbing in children and adults using 3-D kinematic analysis and kinetics, 3. The effect of hip flexor release surgery on stair climbing and over-ground walking in children with cerebral palsy. 4. The development of sitting in children with cerebral palsy as measured by center of pressure from a force platform and non-linear analysis methodology. 5. Effect of the SWASH hip abduction orthosis in a child with spastic cerebral palsy. 6. The effect of kinesiotaping on strength measures and gait in children with spastic cerebral palsy. 7. Treadmill walking in children with developmental delay using a partial weight-support device. 8. Over-ground walking in children with developmental delay using a partial weight-support device and 9. Hamstring flexibility in children with cerebral palsy. The Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) Motion Analysis Lab includes equipment to carry out quantitative motion analysis including six camera 3-D Vicon motion system, four AMTI force platforms embedded into a 50 foot walkway, 16 channel Motion Lab EMG data acquisition system, four riser stairs that include and instrumented rail and three treads intrumented using AMTI force platforms, a Biodex treadmill and weight support device and Biodex dynamometer. Wayne Stuberg, PhD, PT, PCS is the Lab Director, Glen Ginsburg, MD is the Lab Medical Director and additional staff include a research physical therapist (Stacey DeJong, MS, PT) and technician (Tami Wattnem, MS).
