Project Description:
The aim of the proposed research is to design an Industry-Driven Support Model for disadvantaged entrepreneurs with disabilities, and pilot test the model within two industries. Self-employment is a viable alternative to competitive work for people with disabilities (Doyel, 2000; Doyel, 2002; Griffin & Hammis, 2003; National Center on Workforce and Disability, 2009; Office of Disability Employment Policy, 2009). While self-employment offers flexibility and accommodations, people with disabilities often lack social capital and access to resources. Network theory suggests that marginalized populations benefit from formal and informal networks and networks are implicitly essential to building social capital (Coleman 1988; Putnam, 1993). This model will address barriers faced by disadvantaged entrepreneurs with disabilities in the ?post business concept? development of their business (e.g., low readiness skills, lack of social capital and need for more support and assistance). Using network theory, the approach will initially use horizontal ties (within local community) and expand to using vertical (outside of local area, region or state) ties. The approach will also endeavor to expand individuals? social capital from mainly strong ties (family and close friends) to include weak ties (acquaintances) that are not normally part of the social circle of individuals with disabilities. Research participants will include 12-20 low or very low-income potential or current entrepreneurs with disabilities. These entrepreneurs will need to have a developed business concept, at a minimum, and may be in the beginning stages of operating their business. They will complete pre and post data, participate in the Industry-Driven workshops and network sessions, and provide evaluation feedback to the researchers. The research questions of the proposed project are as follows: 1. Does the Industry-Driven Support Model show promise as an effective method for use with disadvantaged entrepreneurs, as defined by SBA, specifically those with disabilities? 2. Does the Industry-Driven Support Model increase the number of entrepreneurs with disabilities who successfully launch and sustain their business? 3. Does the Industry-Driven Support Model have an impact on business milestones and gross sales?
