Project Description:
The Interdisciplinary Traineeship program at The Boggs Center provides a select group of undergraduate and graduate students with individualized learning opportunities, training a cadre of professionals prepared to provide leadership in the field of developmental disabilities. The program, which runs from September through June, includes required seminars; visits to different types of service settings; interviews with people with disabilities, service providers, and families; an individualized project; annotated bibliography; and projects with Boggs Center faculty and staff. An individualized training plan combines required and specialized activities, reflecting each student's interests and experience. The traineeship is conducted in an independent study format, with academic credit with approval of advisor. Each student is matched with a Boggs Center facilitator, who guides the student's activities and provides feedback. Two levels of Interdisciplinary Traineeships are offered: the Long Term Traineeship and the Independent Project-Focused Traineeship. All medical students at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School receive an introduction to developmental disabilities and family centered care through the Developmental Disabilities Seminar, a required component of the pediatric rotation for all third year medical school. The Boggs Center coordinates the seminar eight times each year in collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. A key component of the seminar is visits to families in their homes, which aims to increase awareness of and sensitivity to the strengths and needs of families who have a child with a developmental disability. The Certificate Program in Developmental Disabilities is co-sponsored by the Rutgers School of Social Work Continuing Education Program and The Boggs Center. It is intended to enhance the skills and knowledge of professionals working in the field of developmental disabilities and professionals working with people with disabilities in a variety of settings. The Boggs Center chairs the Certificate Program Advisory Council. Boggs Center faculty teach the workshops on cultural competence, disability policy, positive behavior supports, and transition.
