Interdisciplinary Behavioral Health Training
Project Description:
Support for behavioral health trainees at MMI has been provided through the Quentin N. Burdick and MCH training grants. Through an additional complementary grant from the Allied Health program of the Bureau of Health Professions, the Munroe-Meyer Institute provides support for interdisciplinary faculty from behavioral health departments to conduct training for graduate students, interns, post-doctoral fellows, medical students, and residents. Faculty from the UCEDD's Departments of Psychology and Social Work, and from the Department of Family Medicine's Medical Family Therapy training program, are supported on this grant. The impetus of this training program is upon educating behavioral health professionals to function as service providers within primary health care practices. Students are placed and trained in facilities including underserved rural sites (Hastings, Columbus, and Plattsmouth, Nebraska), as well as HRSA-funded Community Health Centers (Indian-Chicano Health Center, Charles Drew Health Center, and Council Bluffs [Iowa] Community Health Center). Trainees are educated in short-term, protocol-driven behavioral health care provision that is offered as part of the array of services in primary health care practice. Annually, approximately 15 trainees participate in this educational program under the tutelage of five faculty members who are partially supported from this Allied Health Training Grant.
