Reducing Seclusion and Restraints through Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
Project Description:
Northern Arizona University, AzUCD, received funding from the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council to build the capacity in Arizona to support local education authorities in their own efforts to train staff in PBIS, create positive school climates, make data-based decisions, and ultimately reduce the use of dangerous and unnecessary seclusions and restraints. This will be accomplished by bringing together and coordinating the existing state resources in PBIS and bringing the strengths of the state DD Network to this project. The outcome of this project will ultimately enable more students with developmental disabilities in Arizona's public and charter schools to be productive, integrated and included in daily life.

The Sonoran UCEDD has a small sub-award under this grant to perform a limited independent evaluation of the first year of the project. This includes a comparison of progress towards the 38-item Implementation Blueprint and Self-Assessment, a survey of PBISAz Advisory Council (AC) members perceptions of the process, and phone interviews of a small sample of the AC members.
