Project Description:
The Mailman Center for Child Development has been asked to evaluate the Literacy Enhancement for Early Readers (LEER) program, an Early Reading First grant awarded to the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education by the Department of Health and Human Services. LEER is a partnership among the United Way Center for Excellence; two voluntary pre-k programs located in the Miami Dade County Public School System; a preschool located in the Miami-Dade Community College System; a community-based preschool, the University of Miami, and Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), a nonprofit education research and development organization. Literacy Enhancement for Early Readers (LEER, or ?to read? in Spanish) will improve the school readiness of 180 low-income, ethnically and language-diverse children in 12 classrooms by preparing them to enter kindergarten with the cognitive, early language and literacy skills needed for success in school. This evaluation involves assessment and observations and will collect both quantitative and qualitative data.
