Debbie School Auditory/Oral Education Program
Project Description:
The Debbie Schools Auditory/Oral Education Program provides early educational intervention services for children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Funding is provided through a cooperative agreement with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the University of Miami Mailman Center for Child Development. The program?s mission is to provide an educational environment where children who are deaf and hard of hearing learn to communicate through spoken language by listening and talking. The program philosophy is based on the premise that early identification and educational intervention in an Auditory/Oral learning environment improves outcomes for deaf and hard of hearing children and allows them to learn to communicate with their families, friends, and people in the wider world.
The Auditory/Oral Education Program provides services for children who are deaf and hard of hearing five hours per day for five days per week for up to thirty-five children (35) from twelve months to eight years of age and includes three inclusion classrooms and two self-contained classrooms. In addition, newly identified children are served in the home setting through the Early Steps Serving Hearing Impaired Newborns Effectively (SHINE) Program.
