Georgia's Individual Placement and Supports Training and Technical Assistance Phase I

Project Description:
The Institute on Human Development and Disability (IHDD) will provide training and technical assistance to the Supported Employment program contractors of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD). Separate and distinct modules will be created for Supported Employment Program Managers and for front-line Employment Specialists. Using a mixture of web-based and fieldwork instruction, both cohorts will receive training and technical assistance with the delivery of evidence-based supported employment, including training in implementation, leadership, on-going system engagement (Vocational Rehabilitation) and methods and techniques to improve fidelity, increase customized job development, and sustain workers with mental illness in jobs of their choosing. All seven of the core principles within the Individual Placements and Support (IPS) model will be taught, tested and reinforced. In addition, the project will create a performance improvement feedback loop to focus on continuous enhancement of skill sets. The specific deliverables are: 1. Design initial Survey on Training Needs regarding IPS model of supported employment to all DBHDD mental health supported employment service providers. 2. Design pre-test and post-test for all training participants (one for front-line staff and another for managerial staff). 3. Design of Training and Technical Assistance Module for Georgias mental health Supported Employment Program Managers (leadership) using the IPS model rooted in Georgias specific systems. 4. Design of Training and Technical Assistance Module for Georgias mental health Employment Specialists (front-line) using the IPS model rooted in Georgias specific systems. 5. Conduct a six-week course for training and technical assistance of Georgias mental health Supported Employment Program Managers (leadership) using the IPS model rooted in Georgias specific systems. (Estimated number of staff = 30) 6. Conduct two six-week courses for training and technical assistance of Georgias mental health Employment Specialists (front-line) using the IPS model rooted in Georgias specific systems. (Estimated number of staff = 60) 7. Provide continuous feedback to learner assignments and cohort progress throughout the six week modules, tailoring each module to the cohorts needs and issues. 8. Provide on-site training and technical assistance in first module for each of the cohorts. 9. Provide on-site fieldwork during week 5 to each of the cohorts. 10. Provide final consultation regarding post-testing results to identify areas of improvement and additional training for each of the cohorts. Learning Objectives for Program Managers: Program Managers will learn and understand the science and sound logic behind following the IPS model. Program Managers will learn and understand how to ensure consumer preferences are the hallmark of supported employment supports. Program Managers will be able to differentiate between Job Development and Employer Development. Program Managers will learn and understand the basics in conducting and leading Customized Employment Options. Program Managers will learn and understand the key aspects of integrating employment supports into other mental health services (ACT Teams and Peer Supports). Program Managers will learn and understand the leadership knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to lead an evidence-based SE program. Learning Objectives for Employment Specialists: Employment Specialists will learn and understand the science and sound logic behind following the IPS model. Employment Specialists will learn and understand how to ensure consumer preferences are the hallmark of supported employment supports by using the Discovery Process with one job seeker. Employment Specialists will be able to differentiate between Job Development and Employer Development. Employment Specialists will learn and understand the basics of conducting and creating Customized Employment Options. Employment Specialists will learn and understand their role in integrating employment supports into other mental health services (ACT Teams and Peer Supports).
