Center:
Fiscal Year:
2013
Contact Information:
Project Description:
Newborn screening (NBS) is a vital medical and public health function provided to all newborns in the United States. NBS is the practice of testing all infants for certain disorders that can impede typical development and lead to intellectual and physical disabilities, as well as life-threatening conditions. Infants with these conditions often appear healthy at birth but can develop serious medical conditions later in infancy or in childhood. The NBS system is intended to be a comprehensive process, including not only initial screening and diagnosis but also long-term follow-up care through the medical home. The purpose of this project is to improve the long-term follow-up process, including the provision of quality chronic disease management, evidence-based condition-specific treatment and age appropriate preventive care throughout the lifespan for NBS-identified individuals.
