Developmental Disabilities Health Care E-Toolkit

Center:
Fiscal Year:
2013
Contact Information:
Project Description:
The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (VKC) UCEDD and LEND will create the first Electronic Toolkit for Primary Care of Adults with Developmental Disabilities to help primary care physicians in the United States better serve individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities. This electronic Toolkit will be an adaptation of Canadas Tools for the Primary Care of People with Developmental Disabilities (2011), which is peer-reviewed, evidence-based, and user-friendly. The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center will collaborate with the University of Tennessee Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities UCEDD and LEND and the Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. U.S. adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities often encounter substandard health care. Few community professionals are experienced in providing services for adults with IDD, and medical or dental programs provide minimal disability-related training. By adapting the Canadian tools and making them available electronically, virtually every U.S. primary care provider could have access to these best-practice tools, enabling them to more readily serve adults with DD. Elise McMillan, VKCs UCEDD co-director, is the principal investigator, and Janet Shouse is the program coordinator for the project.
