Hyp Hop Study for Periodic Paralysis

Project Description:
Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYP) and Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis (HOP) are extraordinarily rare genetic disorders that result in extremely debilitating attacks of weakness and sometimes quadriplegia. Although the attacks are typically transient, the frequency of the attacks dramatically affects the quality of life of affected patients. This study proposes to study the efficacy of DCP in lowering the attack of paralysis in patients with HYP and HOP. The design is a double-blind, placebo controlled, study lasting nine weeks comparing the DCP to placebo in these patients. The nine week trial will be followed by a one year open label extension during which all subjects will be taking DCP. Dr. Fowler is the Co-Investigator and is in charge of all the PT outcome measurements of the study.
