Project Description:
NEED: How to better serve an increasingly aging DD population.
GOALS:1. Enhance Provider Capacity to Deliver Medical Services to Adults with DD. 2.Disseminate Information to Consumers, Parents, and Providers About Special Health Services Available. 3.Enhance Knowledge of Family Members and Consumers,Where Appropriate, about Health and Legal Issues Related to Health Care for Individuals with DD.
OBJECTIVES - A. Promote Family-centered Physician Training Via:
1. Conducted a Needs Assessment Survey of Bronx physicians regarding adults with DD.
2. Seminars for family medicine residents conducted by parents and consumers.
3. CME (12 credit) course for Bronx PCP physicians, including self-study and 3 hour seminar/dinner.
4. Produced and Distributed to Bronx physicians the Award-Winning Directory of Health Services for Bronx Residents with Developmental Disabilities, now in 3rd Edition (wildly popular with parents and consumers).
5. Parent-run core lectures for multidisciplinary trainees: Breaking the News.?
6. Hunter Lecture at MMC to Pediatrics Department Residents and Attending Physicians.
B. Educating Family Members through City-wide and Bronx Conferences:
1. Co-sponsored city-wide conferences on aging and
developmental disabilities and NYOMRDD, including the self-advocates.
2. Medicaid Managed Care, including videotapes from New Hampshire UCEDD on advocacy.
3. Women's health-care management issues.
4. Seizures: Causes, Latest Medications and Treatment Modalities, including Vagus Nerve Stimulation.
5. Asthma and developmental disabilities.
6. End of Life Care: DNR, Health-care Proxy, Living Wills.
7. Organizing, Planning, and Participating at Bronx MR/DD Council Family Support Conferences.
