2.04 Texas Advanced Advocacy and Leadership Conference
Project Description:
2.04 Texas Advanced Advocacy and Leadership Conference
Advocacy at the local and statewide level needs more individuals with disabilities to represent their causes and concerns. The Texas Advanced Leadership and Advocacy Conference serves individuals with disabilities who strive to be disability leaders and work for positive changes for individuals with disabilities through advocacy efforts. TALAC accomplishes this by providing statewide training in advocacy, grassroots organization, public speaking, and leadership.
TALAC has four main goals. One goal is to increase the number of competent leaders and advocates with disabilities across the state of Texas. TALAC also seeks to equip current leaders and advocates with up-to-date knowledge and skills in the areas of legislative advocacy and advocacy. TALAC strives to advance these leaders' legislative experiences to influence policy. In addition, TALAC endeavors to build and expand a network of leaders and advocates in the disability community for united efforts in effective advocacy actions. These goals give TALAC's members the understanding of effective ways to implement their ideas and puts them in touch with like-minded individuals.
TALAC is unique in its support of its members. Texas A&M has created a website to offer needed assistance and information to TALAC members, individuals with disabilities and interested individuals and to publicize TALAC's goals, accomplishments, and activities. In addition, TALAC members have access to an electronic board to prepare for upcoming events, exchange ideas, and engage in online learning activities. Finally, TALAC works with other disability organizations to seek appropriate opportunities for its members to expand their networks. These supports allow our membership to stay informed on important topics, to stay informed on what other members are doing, and to understand what other disability organizations are doing.
