Project Description:
The objective of this project is to improve residents understanding and ability to care for the primary health care needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and individuals who are HIV positive. Currently, individuals with disabilities are less likely to needed health care or to feel that their health care providers understand and are knowledgeable about providing care for individuals with disabilities. To address these health disparities and ensure physicians understand the needs of patients with disabilities and are willing and able to provide care to disabled individuals, FCM is proposing a to expand and strengthen its disability based curriculum. The work plan utilizes five distinct methodologies: 1. Didactic sessions on disability, including interactive case based and web modules. 2. Observation and direct care of persons with disabilities in the home, a specialty clinic or institutional setting. 3. Sessions in FCM's Medical Home Clinic for adults with developmental disabilities 4. Participation with community disability groups in health education and prevention activities. 5. Web based modules will be developed as a unique approach to covering background information to residents regarding the broad scope of disability and the health care needs of individuals and families, and the role of the family physician as part of the healthcare team. The proposed grant activities will build during the course of the three year grant, beginning with initial didactic presentations on disability and health care in the first year; specialized disability health topics during the second year core month; an additional teaching day topic in all three years; a web based module implement by year three and opportunities for home visits and experience at disability based clinics in year three.
