Project Description:
The goal of this project is to participate in testing the utilization of a standardized Spina Bifida Electronic Medical Record in the Spina Bifida Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, to improve patient care, including coordination of care, process improvement, tracking, preparation for transition, patient monitoring for follow-up, and patient safety, developed by the Spina Bifida Association (SBA) and Center for Disease Control and prevention (CDC). The hope for this beta test project is the eventual use of a universal data collection system for caregivers of children with spina bifida to standardize and improve care for these individuals nationally. Researchers at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles will that initially use the EMR for the voluntary registered families from the Center for Disease and Prevention funded Spina Bifida Patient Registry Demonstration Project which includes children ages birth to 21 years and their parents from the Spina Bifida Center. The Spina Bifida Clinic will start with dual imputing onto CHLA?s electronic medical record system, through Cerner Corporation, Knowledge Information and Decision Support (KIDS) and then discussion regarding feasibility of use will be carried out with the CHLA Information Services (IS) Department of the realistic possibility if an interface can be developed that is compatible with existing hardware and software with the Legacy Electronic Spina Bifida Medical Record Beta Project within 18 months. If feasible it will then be incorporated into clinical use. Information will be available for future quality improvement efforts.
