Project Description:
There is a critical need to further build the self-advocacy movement in Georgia, strengthening current self-advocates and expanding the number of people involved in self-advocacy. People First of Georgia, Inc. is the largest self-advocacy organization in the State, with 30 chapters and over 600 members. The three main goals of the organization are: to free people from nursing homes and institutions, increase choice and control in the lives of people with disabilities, and to increase positive social attitudes toward people with disabilities. IHDD/UCEDD supports these goals and works to assist People First of GA by providing administrative assistance including: organization of a minimum of three board meetings per year, a quarterly newsletter, a People First web page, organization of the annual state-wide conference, organization of advisor's meetings and retreats, and grant writing efforts. IHDD/UCEDD also supports People First of Georgia by assisting with development of new chapters across the state. The main outcome of this project is an increase in self-advocacy activities state-wide.
