Project Description:
The last decade in Georgia has been one of contradictions in terms of community-based supports for people with disabilities and citizens with mental illness who need employment to become fully included in their communities. From 2001 through 2008, Georgia enjoyed an influx of innovative funding for employment supports. Projects funded through the Office of Disability Employment Policy introduced the notion of Customized Employment to the service delivery system in the state. The Institute on Human Development and Disability at the University of Georgia piloted several projects, which focused on delivering an entirely new approach to the employment of people who had previously been considered too impacted by their disability or illness to even consider work. By teaching providers, practitioners, and educators that employment truly could be an outcome for anyone who wanted to go to work, the focus on the Discovery Process as an alternative to the traditional vocational assessment became a reality. To accomplish that, this MIG project titled, Employment for All, will focus on six fundamental areas to strategically address the practices, attitudes, approaches and competencies that will most impact the creation of a stable and efficient system of employment services delivery. The Employment for All project will do so by taking advantage of technology to deliver best-practice training in parts of the state that would otherwise not be reached. By building on the good work over the last decade and through enlisting new supporters, partners and stakeholders, the systemic barriers that prevent full employment will be removed, and Georgia businesses, local communities, and rehabilitation funders will realize an economy that is diverse, robust and full of opportunities for all job seekers.
